Hailed by CNN as “one of the top ensembles of today,” Sejong Soloists is a New York City-based chamber orchestra celebrated for its artistic excellence, innovative programming, and commitment to promoting new works. Founded in 1994 by Juilliard professor Hyo Kang, the ensemble began when Kang invited eleven prize-winning young artists from eight countries. Sejong quickly gained acclaim with its inaugural performance at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center and its appointment as ensemble-in-residence at the Aspen Music Festival the following season.

Since its inception, Sejong Soloists has performed over 700 concerts in 120 cities worldwide, including repeated appearances at Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, Wigmore Hall, Seoul Arts Center, Suntory Hall, and other major European venues. At Carnegie Hall alone, they have performed twenty times. Beyond traditional stages, the ensemble has  performed at landmark events, including the Olympic Torch Ceremony at the United Nations for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games and as the Honorary Ambassador of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Games. From 2003 to 2010, Sejong organized the Music in PyeongChang Festival in South Korea, further expanding its cultural contributions.

Renowned for its cohesiveness and versatility, Sejong Soloists has evolved from a string ensemble into a chamber orchestra, actively commissioning and premiering 15 new works. Ongoing collaborations with distinguished artists such as Gil Shaham, Vadim Repin, Ian Bostridge and Joyce DiDonato have been a hallmark of its programming.  An ever-cutting-edge ensemble, Sejong incorporates the latest technological trends, presenting the first live classical performance in the metaverse in 2021, launching the NFT Classics Society in 2022, and commissioning Tod Machover’s Overstory Overture (2023) and Flow Symphony (2024) the latter created in partnership with MIT Media Lab incorporating AI technologies.

Committed to nurturing future artistic leaders, Sejong members and alumni have taken prominent roles as concertmasters in leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera, the Montreal Symphony, and the Hamburg Philharmonie, as well as faculty positions at Juilliard and Yale.

To celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2024, Sejong Soloists launched an inaugural festival at Carnegie Hall featuring world and New York premieres by composers Augusta Read Thomas, Unsuk Chin, and Texu Kim. The ensemble also presents Hic et Nunc!, an annual music festival in Seoul, highlighting its dedication to artistic innovation and international collaboration.
